Micronutrient: Mo

FUNCTION IN PLANTS
OCCURRENCE UNDER DIFFERENT SOIL CONDITIONS
  • Needed in plant for utilization of nitrogen.
  • Required for nitrogen fixation by Rhizobium bacteria in legumes.
  • Deficient soils are often acid sandy, highly podzolized or freely drained calcareous soils.
  • Mo available to plants increases with pH or with liming.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES PLANTS PRONE TO DEFICIENCY
  • Mo deficiency resembles N deficiency, i.e. plants grow slowly and have pale green leaves.
  • Old leaves become chlorotic and soon thereafter symptoms appear at the leaf margins.
  • Yellow spotting of citrus is typical for Mo deficiency.
  • Most often required by pasture and crop legumes.
Other sensitive crops are cereals, sugar beet, Brassica crops and tomato.
