FUNCTION IN PLANTS [Col OCCURRENCE UNDER DIFFERENT SOIL CONDITIONS
  • Component in vitamin B12 which is essential for nitrogen fixing bacteria in legumes and higher animals.
  • Co level is low in highly leached soils, soils derived from acid volcanic rocks or in highly calcareous or peaty soils.
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES PLANTS PRONE TO DEFICIENCY
  • Poor growth in sensitive plants. This can be relieved by application of ammonium- or nitrate-nitrogen.
Inadequate levels of Co in the herbage can lead to deficiency diseases in grazing animals.
  • Bean, pea, clover, alfalfa and lucerne.
